[music |Boom Boom Boom - the Iguanas]

I don't really care about so much about the plots on White Collar. They just keep giving me tasty OT3 stuff and I'm content.

I've spent most of the day uploading stuff to the AO3. It allows me to feel productive when I can't write. I have too many goddamn stories, though. [info - personal] angelgazing pointed out that I will never be done uploading because I write faster than I upload. Though possibly this is no longer the case. I don't know. I have been having my usual late autumn/early winter problems getting motivated. Since the archive takes so long to upload, I am also rereading some favorite stories (I don't have to pay as close attention to rereads - I can skim and skip and be interrupted without losing anything, 'cause I've already read them before). I keep getting errors, unfortunately, which is slowing things down even more.

Technology is not my friend.

I know lots of people are excited by tagging their stories in all sorts of ways, but I am doing what I find useful and that's it. As long as I get the characters/pairing on there, and maybe if it's a casefile or an episode tag, that's about the extent of my interest. Maybe if I upload my HP stuff, I'll split the Remus/Sirius out by era, like I have it in my tags on LJ, but mostly I don't care about the tags. *hides*

Also, I wish there were a place in the profile to link to a warnings policy, and that that link could just automatically be included on every story. Because I am just using the "No Primary Warnings Apply" which isn't the same as "no warnings needed" but 99% of my stuff is "no warnings needed" and I'd like to be able to say that somewhere, since it isn't a choice on the warnings field. I guess I could make it a tag, but I never think of it. I wish it were automatic.

Hmm...

sort of a kink poll... [Nov. 28th, 2009|03:05 am]

I've been reading a slash story in which a heated argument between the couple (who are also friends) results in punch being thrown, and then the one punched actually finds the aggression a turn on and it goes on to sex. Somehow this combination of sex and violence doesn't work for me at all, not even in fiction, where I'm not averse to combinations of sex and violence.

Like, I can go along fine if the aggression is against some kind of third party, and one character is turned on by the other being violent, or they are turned on mutually, say if they are both in a barfight or even slaughter others. I can also go along with non-con that involves violence with the victim not being turned on, but I as a reader like it. But if the violence is between the couple (and they are supposed to like each other), uncontrolled violence segueing into sex (rather than say rough sex that is mutually agreed upon) is squicky for me, more so if the violence is not mutual (the latter would be more fighting leading to fucking in some kind of hate sex, which I also don't like, but it is not as bad as one sided violence).

Most often this is shown from the POV of the character the aggression is turned upon rather than the violent character being turned on by the escalation, i.e. A hits B, usually after some provocation, then B somehow finds that aggression/violence (or sometimes the loss of control) hot, and sex follows. I have to admit that I find this particular combination of sex and violence to be surprising as a kink, and it always startles me, but I see this every now and then, and I'm wondering whether it is something that many people like in sex scenes.

So, a poll:

Two Great Tastes? [Nov. 27th, 2009|08:07 pm]

So this post by [info - personal] havocthecat implies that Sanctuary fandom is big on incest? Now, I'm a fan of both 'cest fic and Sanctuary but for some reason the idea of the two together surprised me, and I began to figure out just how many 'cest combinations were possible in that fandom (although of couse, only one has to catch on--the most plausible striking me as Druitt/Ashley). There's actually more than I realized at first (at first, I could only think of Helen/Ashley): two father/daughter pairings, one mother/daughter, one brother/sister, and one grandfather/granddaughter. Unless there's more I'm just not thinking of?

Still doesn't really speak to me, though.

Barbara Hambly short stories available direct [Nov. 27th, 2009|04:13 pm]

the_shoshanna
seen in [info] cofax's linkspam roundup: Barbara Hambly is selling short stories connected to her older (Del Rey) fantasy series, direct from her website for $5 a pop. There are two Benjamin January stories, one Joanna Sheraton and Antryg Windrose, and one, um, wacky mashup. Buy them here! I will soon, but right now I have to go make the cranberry sauce (with orange zest, fresh ginger, cinnamon, and clove. Mmmmmmmmmmmm).

I spent yesterday driving to Massachusetts, along with Geoff and a friend; my folks are doing Thanksgiving on Saturday, because it fits everyone's schedules better. So actual turkey day was entirely sans turkey, but turkey prep has begun! (We just came back from going to pick it up at a local farm.)

I'm thankful for my friends, my health, my financial security, and my physical comfort. I'm thankful for modern medicine, which has kept my father (among others) alive, sustained him, and enabled him to reach this day. I'm thankful for fandom, for fannish friends, for fannish projects, for fannish squee and porn and gumption and collaborative effort. I'm thankful for my life, and the communities and the world I live it in.

I hope those of you who celebrated yesterday are still comfortably curled up around your distended bellies. (Unless you were crazed enough to go shopping today, in which case I hope you got whatever it was you were willing to brave the maddened crowds for. Better you than me.) If you're not the celebrating-U.S.-Thanksgiving type, I hope you're having a wonderful weekend of your own!

[music |Giants v. Broncos on tv]

Happy Thanksgiving to those who are celebrating! Happy Thursday to those who are not. I hope everyone had a lovely day, regardless.

My day began with BACON and PIE and ended with FOOTBALL and PIE, and in between there was stuffing and homemade cheese macaroni and turkey that was actually moist and tasty (!!), and more family shenanigans than you could shake a stick at. My brother was in rare form tonight, and basically had the whole table in stitches for most of the meal. Mostly at my expense, but eh, that's not new. and unfortunately, the Giants are capping off the day by sucking like unto a hoover, but I am too full and sleepy to care too much.

I am thankful for my family, my friends - including you guys - my health, and my job. Man, a year ago at this time, I was a week away from being laid off. I'm still a little freaked out by how that went, still anxious and lacking in confidence sometimes, but I'm so glad I found a new job quickly, and one that I mostly like, for people and an organization that I like. (I'm also grateful that I have tomorrow off and I don't have to use a day - it's one of our holidays. Mmm...sleeping in...) I'm grateful I have health insurance and can pay my rent and that I have an apartment I love.

I'm thankful for fandom, not just because of all the great stories to read and the feeling of having people who get my excitement about various shows and characters, but because of all the great people I've met and become friends with, who've made my life richer and better and more fun all around.

*hugs*

And also, I am thankful for PIE, and I would share some with you all if I could.

Cooking Triumphant [Nov. 26th, 2009|06:12 pm]

We had our aging stove cleaned on Tuesday in advance of Turkey day. It worked fine last night....but this evening the gas is no longer flowing into the oven. Gas Bar-B-Que to the rescue! Thank goodness there was enough propane in the tank. We've never roasted a whole bird on the bar-bi before but it went well with the improvised metal roasting pan out of aluminum foil. Of course it meant xlorp had to sit outside in the dark tending the grill while I waved to him from the kitchen from time to time.

The cats were not amused. I am, however, hoping that we might get a new stove out of all of this. The one that came with the house was very cheap and doesn't heat very well.

Glee & etc. [Nov. 26th, 2009|11:04 am]

[mood | contemplative]

I have not yet seen this week's episode, but: has anyone else found themselves just recording Glee and then fast-forwarding through it to (mostly) watch only the musical numbers? The actual "plots" have generally become deeply embarrassment (and otherwise) squick inducing for me, as much as I love the music.

While I'm talking about squick-inducing things, TCM is running a Fred Astaire marathon today, and Swing Time is on. I love this movie, not least for the completely awesome white dress with gorgeous full skirt that Ginger Rogers wears when she dances on the stairs with Fred. However! I believe that this movie is also the one which has Fred dancing in blackface. *facepalm* When I fell in love with this movie as a child, I didn't know any better, but now? Ick.

And while I'm here, I'd like to wish all who celebrate it a very Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm very, very, very, very thankful for my friends. I would not be here anymore without y'all. I'm equally thankful for my mother who is the only member of my family who sees me as an actual person worth liking and even loving.

I'm thankful for all the pets I have and have had in my life. Their love and companionship makes life a little more bearable.

I'm thankful for the music and stories (written and filmed) that I've had the pleasure of experiencing in my life.

I'm thankful for the internet which has allowed me to meet so many wonderful people.

Check out the rest of the Wrangulatorverse, starting with "forma." Perhaps I shall write one myself, after I open the can of worms that is significance of name order in pairing listings in certain fandoms (and certain segments of certain other fandoms, which is gonna be the fun part) and if it's possible to do synonyms with a disambiguation option.

my cousins' wife was taken off life support and passed away. the cancer had spread into her lungs and she was in a medically induced coma for the last week. her oldest (9) told her father that her younger brother (5) was "too young" to have lost their mother.  neither child was able to say goodbye  - I am not certain if this is a good thing or not.

she was 45 years old.

Because when there's wrangling to be done and fic to be revised or drafted, that's clearly the time for a meme. Entry not yet tagged for the fic, so as not to spoil the surprise.

Lifted from [info] longsufferingly:1. Write down the names of 10 characters.

2. Write a fic of fifteen words or less for every prompt, using the characters determined by the numbers. Do NOT read the prompts before you do step 1.

1. Kurosaki Hisoka (Yami no Matsuei)
2. Jin Bora (Anyband)
3. Stephanie (CSJH)
4. Jensen Ackles (CW RPF)
5. Kim Junsu (DBSK)
6. Clayman (GetBackers)
7. Elizabeth Swann (PotC)
8. Satine (Moulin Rouge)
9. Trinity (The Matrix)
10. Ben (Dark Angel)

For tonight's bout of stress baking, I made blueberry boy bait (as recommended by [info - livejournal.com] devildoll), which came out well, I think (I am taking half to work and half to the parents), but I also think it needs more blueberries. Clearly I need to double the amount next time. And possibly make it in cupcake tins or my mini-loaf pan. Hmm...

Maybe one day I'll be like a real food blogger and remember to take pictures of stuff before I slice into it and wrap it up. Today was not that day.

On my ride home tonight (I was at work late again), I listened to Adam Raised a Cain a few times and vidded it in my head. I would be the most literal vidder ever. Anyway. I know I say this all the time, but where is the Sam Winchester vid to this song? WHERE IS IT? I think this season has provided more awesome footage for someone to do this.

the lyrics, in case you missed them the first 100 times I mentioned this idea )

Seriously, if I had minions, I would make one of them vid this for me.

here, have some synonyms [Nov. 24th, 2009|05:56 pm]

Put in CSJH and Chun Sang Ji Hee for CSJH. For Dong Bang Shin Ki:

DBSK
Dong Bang Shin Gi
DBSG
TVXQ
TVfXQ
Tong Vfang Xien Qi
Tohoshinki
THSK

Currently, there are no Banjun Theatre stories in the archive. Like Anyband FPF, my instinct is that it should be a distinct subfandom that's searchable on its own or as part of a DBSK search, but the ability to create subfandoms and metafandoms isn't yet in place, so if you've got a Banjun story, just put it in as a new fandom.

Now I get to decide if I want to wrangle more synonyms for CSJH or concentrate on one fandom at a time and wrangle all the synonyms for the DBSK pairings that are already in the system (oh, sweet mother of Mike). Also, I'm not quite sure what to do about the fact that Minho is both a DBSK pairing and a member of SHINee. I don't think I can wrangle it into one fandom when another's guaranteed to want to use it, even if they're in different Tag wuzzle fields.

Oh, yeah, and Chaotic Butterfly's now a fandom, and I moved The Good King to movies and threw the synonym "Good King Wenceslas" at it. Somebody let me know if there's fic for the carol and I need to change that.

ETA: Went ahead and synonymized TSZX, TJCK, Tenjo Chiki, Tenjochiki, and Tian Shang Zhi Xi (which I'm gonna have to mess with if they change the code to allow non-English accented characters).

ETA 2: THIS IS ANOTHER REASON TO HATE THAT STUPID "THE GRACE" BS. *snarls and synonymizes it, though she wants it on record that SHE OBJECTS*
