Why do they now have a tag limit?? Worse, the delicious FF extension doesn't inform you of this, it saves the tags properly and you see them if you look at it in the extension (so not cut off like too long notes), they just don't work for the tag searches, meaning I didn't notice while tagging via the extension and have no idea for how many of my bookmarks the tags don't work properly and which one I'd need to edit down to the more essential tags without going through them manually. This sucks. *grump*

[mood | hopeful]

It should be no surprise to anyone, but it's official now: Barack Obama is the official Democratic nominee for president.

::stares at that sentence:: I...maybe it's just my crazy hormones, but I find myself a bit choked up getting to write this. A nonwhite man is now one of the two major party candidates for president.

Gay people have married in a few states. A woman was nearly the Democratic candidate. A black man will be president, damn it. (I have to believe that or I'll go insane. Don't disabuse me of this, okay?)

I know we have so very very much to overcome, but can I--just for a moment--believe that we're getting there? That maybe we can do something about poverty? Maybe we can educate all of our children, even the ones who live in inner cities? Maybe we can teach all of our children that people of color and white people are really the same, that men and women are equal, that everyone should have a chance to be president or be a stay-at-home parent or be a doctor?

We can do this. To quote the next president of the United States: Yes, we can.

They played "Sister Christian" by Night Ranger earlier, and you know I loved this song when it came out. It's only in the past few years that I learned it was apparently written about the guy's sister, and how he didn't want her to have sex. Sketchy sibling dynamics! My love, it is explained!

[info]cleolinda linked to this and I choked on my coffee. Hee!

I posted a story last night!

Paul Newman and a Ride Home
Supernatural; Dean; g; 2,365 words
Five books Dean Winchester has read more than once.

I jokingly asked [info]amberlynne if I had to warn for spoilers for the books involved (The Runaway Bunny, Little Women, The Outsiders, and To Kill a Mockingbird), but I do think the story works better if you're familiar with the books, because it's more about their individual impact on Dean than it is about just love of books or reading in general, which I don't think is necessarily Dean's thing.

I was a little worried that, like the mixtape story, the story would end up more about me and books than it is about Dean and books, because I love all four of those books madly, but I think it worked out pretty well.

I am going to ramble on extensively now about this. Flee, if that does not interest you. otherwise, click the cut tag. )

The story makes me happy, which I guess is the whole point, and it seems to be making other people happy (well, in that way that they tell me they're crying, so, you know, score!). Thank you for the lovely comments, btw. I truly appreciate them and will get to answering them soonish.

Writing [Aug. 28th, 2008|02:48 am]

luthien
It's been an interesting process over the past few days, finding my writing muscles again after more than a year since I last wrote anything longer than the very occasional ficlet. I'd forgotten so much about my own personal writing process. I've found that I'm more productive in the evening than the daytime, and that I get more written after midnight than at any other time, which is exactly the way it used to be. More than once, I've really wished desperately that I could be a linear writer and have everything come out neatly and in order, but my brain just doesn't work that way and never has.

Tonight, though, tonight I'm being forcibly reminded of one other aspect of the way I write: I can never accurately estimate how long one of my stories is going to be. I think this one is finally drawing to a close now, after a detour I didn't see coming, and I can finally get back to the section I wrote days ago, which appears to be the end.

We shall see.

*trudges back to the field of battle for the last round - probably*

A vidding convention is heading to Milton Keynes on 24th-26th October! We're talking vid shows, panels and workshops. Come for High Tea, stay for three days of fannish love and all things vidding - whether you're a vidder or a vid watcher, good times are the plan.

For more information, check out the site at VidUKon.co.uk or take a look at [info]vidukon, where they're currently finalizing their schedule.

and if you cannot attend, they do have supporting memberships that will get you a copy of the convention DVD.

We need leaders once again who can tap into that special blend of American confidence and optimism that has enabled generations before us to meet our toughest challenges, leaders who can help us show ourselves and the world that with our ingenuity, creativity, and innovative spirit, there are no limits to what is possible in America......

John McCain says the economy is fundamentally sound. John McCain doesn't think that 47 million people without health insurance is a crisis. John McCain wants to privatize Social Security. And in 2008, he still thinks it's okay when women don't earn equal pay for equal work," Clinton said.

With an agenda like that, it makes sense that George Bush and John McCain will be together next week in the Twin Cities. Because these days they're awfully hard to tell apart......

I’m a United States senator because, in 1848, a group of courageous women, and a few brave men, gathered in Seneca Falls, New York, many traveling for days and nights to participate in the first convention on women’s rights in our history. And so dawned a struggle for the right to vote that would last 72 years, handed down by mother to daughter to granddaughter, and a few sons and grandsons along the way.

These women and men looked into their daughters’ eyes and imagined a fairer and freer world and found the strength to fight, to rally, to picket, to endure ridicule and harassment, and brave violence and jail.

And after so many decades, 88 years ago on this very day, the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote, became enshrined in our Constitution.

My mother was born before women could vote. My daughter got to vote for her mother for president. This is the story of America, of women and men who defy the odds and never give up.

So how do we give this country back to them? By following the example of a brave New Yorker, a woman who risked her lives to bring slaves to freedom along the Underground Railroad.

On that path to freedom, Harriet Tubman had one piece of advice: “If you hear the dogs, keep going. If you see the torches in the woods, keep going. If there’s shouting after you, keep going. Don’t ever stop. Keep going. If you want a taste of freedom, keep going.”

And even in the darkest moments, that is what Americans have done. We have found the faith to keep going.....In America, you always keep going. We’re Americans. We’re not big on quitting."

I've only got 17 hours of tv viewing scheduled here, and some of them are going away soon. This is pretty much an all time low (hah!) for me on tv watching. But with the way the producers/networks are behaving, I'm just not as inclined to invest in television shows (particularly new ones). I'm beyond tired of letting myself come to care about characters only to have them ripped away from me because Joe Fuckwit in the mystical-magical 'middle america' doesn't love it too.

[music |Constantine on FX]

Random Thought #1
The movie Constantine just started on cable. No matter how often I see it or remind myself that Keeanu plays Constantine, I persist in seeing, in my mind's eye, My Perfect Casting. Which is Callum Keith Rennie. I mean, how awesome would Constantine have been if they'd just had CKR as the lead. Pretty damn awesome, that's how. Also, I'm gonna miss the end of the movie (this viewing) so's I can see the repeat of Eureka. Eureka is definitely one of my happy places.

Random Thought #2
And speaking of happy places. I find myself desperately wanting to spit in the face of every executive at MGM and SciFi. And stomp on their insteps. And ... and other things. My show!!!!! Oh, my show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *weeps*

Not-So-Random Thought #3
If the cancellation of My Happiest Happy Place, aka My Show, aka Stargate Atlantis, were not enough to induce spitin'n'stompin' RAGE in me, then the whole demographics trope would. Because SciFI (and SF) is obviously guy stuff. And the only way women will watch is if the show is a soap opera. And the only way teenagers will watch is if it's a young'n'sexy cast doing 90210-style soap opera. And there must be a focus on characters. So let's cancel the show with the characters that viewers (whatever their age and/or gender ID) love and toss together a new show with characters we don't know and...

*R*E*T*U*R*N* *o*f* *R*A*G*E*

Life really is pain. And then the bastards cancel you. *pouts* Of course, I could end being shown up by TPTB producing another SGA-level fannish love for me. Just, I'm thinkin', it's not really all that likely, is it.

Um, yeah. More later....

Paragraphs should be separated by a blank line.

Like this. See how easy?

Also, indentation is unnecessary.

If I see a story/post that is formatted for print instead of the web I skip it. And I think less of the author.

remember that super sekrit copyright trade agreement I mentioned during Vividcon's Town Hall: Vidding & Visibility? We're still not getting all of the info, but look at what the RIAA is pushing for as part of their lobbying efforts behind closed doors. Not pretty. More here

-Copyright crime czars with federal level enforcement units
-ISPs to verify every audio and video file you upload - spying on you
- worldwide 'three strikes' and you're offline (forever??)- with no judicial hearing.
-hold ISPs liable for their customer's infringement - ditching the DMCA

coming soon (possibly by the end of this year). World-wide (or at least to any members of the G8 trade group)

One-third of people reading CNN.com think it's fair to criticize Elizabeth Edwards for keeping her husband's affair secret. ::headdesk:: Right, because obviously the whole thing is her fault. Even given the obviously non-scientific nature of the poll, that pisses me off.

I was already feeling sick, but that didn't help. ::waves fists of rage::

Meanwhile it's 4:00 and I can't imagine how I'm going to get through the next three hours until Avi gets home. Ugh. It's only Tuesday, isn't it? Wah. I feel like serious crap and this is an improvement over this morning.
